I have been providing training to individuals and to production companies for over 15 years.
The aim is to give you a full understanding of the complexities involved in showcalling. Everyone is always surprised by the need for detail and more detail.
The Producer Role
The way you provide materials, your sharing the technical details of the show in clear language, and your time management skills are critical. Onsite management could often be very much improved. Technical rehesarsal is not old fashioned!
Why this training?
What is showcalling?
Showcalling is a skill which demands training and experience. The fact that we do not operate a sound or lighting desk does not mean that all the role requires is a laptop and a running order.
It is a job calling on many skills.
- Communicating between producer, client and crew to effect successful delivery
- Understanding production and how to ‘feel’ a show.
- Creating a seamless event from a disparate set of rehearsals
- Managing immediate decisions and staying calm.
- Giving the crew a clear understanding of what is coming next
- Supporting the producers in managing client expectations
- Keeping on top of the rehearsal schedule to prevent unnecessary long hours
- Being aware of the needs of all departments to give them the time they need to troubleshoot
- Helping less experienced producers to understand the technical side and thereby avoid offering impossible things to the client creating unwieldy compromise.
There is never enough time onsite. A showcaller can make a huge difference to your project. You might be delivering an awards show. We have probably called dozens of them. Likewise with sales conferences, leadership meetings, car launches, AGMs, Pharma meetings. Anything from a small conference room to an arena.
Who should showcall?
- There is a good reason that the best showcallers often come from a theatre background.
- In theatre we learn to manage high emotional situations and pressure while working with technical understanding.
- These skills are ideally transferable into showcalling
It is very unreasonable to put someone into the position of being asked to showcall without any training or even the benefit of having listened to showcallers to get an understanding of the role.
It is unfair:
- to the person involved being thrown into the deep end,
- to the producer who will be concerned for the welfare of this person and not least the outcome for the show
- to the client who would reasonably expect the showcaller to be as expert in their field as all the other technical crew.
- To the crew themselves who would rather not have a showcaller than someone feeling totally out of their depth.
